Joy-Tools: Scripture and Song

Have you had your Joy Juice today? Sometimes it’s in solitude that we find joy.

Our days are often filled with busyness! We have family obligations; jobs to work; activities to attend; household chores that are imperative; and all those miscellaneous, unexpected interruptions. When someone mentions solitude or quiet time, we think: “That’s impossible!”

Let me encourage you today by reminding you about Suzanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles Wesley. She had nineteen children but she was committed to solitude with the Lord.  In the middle of her “more than busy” day, she would pull her apron up over her head and the children knew this was an indication that mom was praying and reading her Bible and they were not allowed to interrupt.

David Jeremiah writes that “there are times when the only way to find the encouragement we need is to get alone.” He suggests that” God has given us two tools for making solitude work for us: the tool of Scripture and the tool of song. “

The tool of Scripture is a powerful weapon against discouragement.  Listen to what David wrote in Psalm 19:8 & 10:

“The statues of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart…More to be desired are they than gold…sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

The tool of song shows up again and again throughout the Bible…especially in the book of Psalms.

May we find solitude in our day by using our joy-tools of Scripture and Song!
